easy composting

i used to have the traditional 3 bin compost pile. adding food scrapes and leaves and grass, all that good stuff.i never could keep up with the turning and aerating. So, nothing ever happened with it. It just sat there, then the weeds would take over. A big mess. Then, i read an article about red wigglers. I ordered a couple thousand from "gardens alive".I started out with a medium size rubbermaid tub with a lid. Drill holes in the bottom and along the sides for some air circulation. shred news paper into thin strips, soak them in water and ring all the water out.About enough to half fill the tub.mix in alittle potting soil to break up the clumps of matted paper. the soil should be damp also. throw in the worms and some scrapes and your on your way. Keep adding scraps till all the paper turns to a fine dark brown compost. when you want to get the compost out, start putting all your scrapes to 1 side for a few days and all the worms will migrate to that side. scoop up all the compost from that side and replace with more shredded paper and food scraps and repeat the process on the other side. i keep it in my house and there is NO Smell at all. and very very easy. it started out slow , but, now i put something in and it's gone in acouple of days. It's incredible. when i empty it out i transfer it in to a large bin in my shed.

"my kids"

i have acouple of new pictures of my babies. they are frequently are in the sleepy mode. peanut, pickles and jimi. emmie must be upstairs in bed, under the covers. Her favorite place.

Business isn't booming

Where are all the antique stores? Where are all the small businesses. My friend Sharon of http://thefabricofsweetrepose.blogspot.com/ just put up a post about closing shop, and just do shows and flea markets. They can't keep up with the overhead. I love shopping in antique stores. buying all your stuff off eBay is fine but, you lose the thrill of the hunt, and meeting people.traveling from town to town and seeing things you wouldn't have seen other wise, eating in restaurants you wouldn't have, if you weren't searching for that prize.granny's in Iowa city is closing it's doors this month. the Iowa city antique store on Gilbert closed this winter. My Friend Mary has a bead shop in lone tree. It's a great little shop. She opened last fall with high hopes but, it doesn't look to good for her. She'll be next.I agree with sharon, buy american!!! www.howtobuyamerican.com/store support our country, boycott walmart, everything is made to be disposable. that is such bullshit. where is QUALITY!!!

riding

another beautiful day. It wanted to rain but, the sun came out. i got 24 miles in today, My incentive is my middle. i am turning 51 next month. I'm having trouble keeping the fat off, mostly around my midsection. So, i go out and hop on that bike in hopes it helps. It gets harder every year. Keeping that fat off. i don't feel 50, i do think it because i have NO KIDS. They age a person. I have never regretted that choice. Hallelujah!!!!!

Down memory lane

Wow, I've really been taken down memory lane, after reading the comments I've received on "Grandma" my fortune telling machine. I loved Iowa city in the 70's. There were so many cool shops. The walmarts and big shopping malls hadn't taken hold of our country yet. Anybody with an idea and some ambition, could go out and open her own shop and make a go of it,and they did. "Red Rose Old Clothes, Ivy's, Bushnell's Turtle, (they had the best carrot cake) and how about nemo's and buc leathers. Epstein's book store and the portable buildings all lined up when the town was doing alittle rebuilding after a fire. I still have some vintage dresses i bought from red rose, beautiful vintage rayon dresses. i really hit the mother lode.
I rode a motorcycle around town back then and believe it or not i was 1 of only 3 women that had one. i rode the streets on my little honda twinstar. dressed in appropriate motorcycle attire. Halter tops and short shorts, and lace up sandals boy was i a site. My blond hair blowing in the wind. I was also the disco queen. i frequented fieldhouse and maxwells and woodfields. In my crazy clothes and danced the night away. I sure had fun!!!!!

weekend ride

Saturday i headed out north on my bike. i rode to hills, and then to Iowa city. i had head winds the whole way out. but, was blown home. It took me all afternoon. The Iowa river is way up after all the rain. There was a weekend ride with some of the ragbrai teams. it was starting in north liberty. I really wasn't in a drinking mood. Since that's usually what those rides are for. i declined. i really just needed to get some miles in,and come home and get some other stuff done. I call those group rides "day ruiners" since when i get home all i want to do is lay on the couch. All because i drank way to much. Total miles around 35.

Morels

Bill went out early this morning and filled a very large bag with mushrooms. He was so happy. What he doesn't eat he gives them to friends, i don't eat them. I'm going to try and send some to my mom, by using overnite shipping. It was a good weekend for finding them. Just the right amount of rain and warm nights.

did a little better

Today was Gorgous. I got out this morning and rode my 20 miles and hopefully will get more miles in this weekend. We are putting in a short wall to divide the yard. A fire pit is in the planning stages. We have a burning ban. We can get around that by having a fire pit. All my bank statements etc... will go in the pit. It's funny, dig a hole and border it with some stone and add some seats around it. It become a fire pit and not a burning barrel.
Every thing is growing like crazy. Unfortunately for bill so is the grass. Seems we are actually getting a spring. it has'nt gone from 30 to 40 degrees to 80 and 90's. like it has been doing. Love it!!! i also made my 1st rubarb crisp. WHAT A DELICACY OF SPRING> i can't get enough. Tomorrow I'll need to make a couple of more.

new artwork

When the weather doesn't let me out side. I'm in the house at my table conjuring up new things to paint or put together. I have so many obsessions, making art is just one of them. I started a book, where every page has a female in some form. It's my "Book Of Women". Here are 2 pages.

great new vintage floor cloth

Another fabulous linoleum floor cloth "SAVED". I thank barb from sister's in kalona for recognizing a wonderful thing when she sees it. I picked it up on Wednesday, and was alittle afraid to roll it out. i bought it without seeing what kind of shape it was in. But, voila, It's beautiful. i am very happy. These aren't to plentiful. They usually ended up in the dump. What a great idea they were. indestructible, with alot of pets, that's a plus. i now have one in most of the rooms in my house. They were real popular in the 20's and 30's.

Bill and i just had to have her. she's in perfect working order. and was made in 1927. the owner of the store bought her in new york in the sixties, (i think) She's beautiful and the ultimate antique. We are very lucky to have her.

shelly shellshock in all her glory

I finally finished Shelly. It's taken couple of months. So she will take her permanent place on my dining room table. There isn't any other available place. Now I'm on to my next big project. A large mosaic, a portrait of an Indian. It will probably take all summer.

Once again my idea we are reverting back to savages. All the women were raped and torn apart from the inside out. (literally) but, could still manage to sing. There were GOOD souls. The men on the other hand were like reptilians. they were killing and raping and torturing every thing in site. No compassion of ANY sort. They were"nt human. There were afew good men. All i wanted to do was sweep all the women to a safe place.I want to know how i can help them.

circus of the perverse

After seeing the movie "Trade", i was so disturbed by it. Can child sex trade be worse than it has been in the past? Are men getting more reptilian, instead of evolving forward are we regressing back to savages. It sickens me. To me it's to the point of no return!!! It's rampant. It's rampant thru out the world. I don't believe it can be stopped. This is my inspiration for this collage. God help All the Kids that are in slavery as we speak.

prize hoya

i've had this hoya for 24 years.

plants anyone

Plants, Plants everywhere!!!

everything out!!!

Here's a look at my sunroom "before" the plants are outside. I can barely get around. But, I love it that way. Plus, all the rooms is the house have at least 3 to 4 plants also. All very large plants. We need a dolley and we also use a old funeral home gurney that we found in the dumpster of a funeral home. That works great. Every summer i end up getting more. "IT's an obbsession". I can't stop. If it's a beautiful plant "it's mine". We take all of them outside in the spring so i can clean the house and so they can grow another couple of feet. In the summer we just keep the breezes blowing thru the house. No air conditioning. Yes, there are still people out there with out ac, or a cell phone. Bill is a great sport. He never comlains about all the plants. Only when he wrenches his back taking the 10 ton elephant ear outside.then he grumbles alittle.

bike ride pictures

i ride a nice flat route, that is 20 miles. i ride that route during the week before i head to work.

spring is here!!!

I've been out hitting the back roads on my bike. about 65 miles the last couple of days. I love how i feel when I'm out riding. It's so quiet, nothing but, the toads croaking and the pigs squealing from the factory farms. That's another rant (later) but, i do All my thinking on my bike. I get so many things figured out.I'm taking pictures every time i head out. I've posted a few. I'll be riding as much as i can to get ready for Ragbrai. The tornado sirens have been going off as i peck away on my computer. It's pouring rain. got to go take cover!!!

trade

I'm posting about a movie i saw last night. it's called "TRADE". It has Kevin Kline in it. it's about the sex trade an expose. I couldn't stop thinking about it. It was so disturbing. But, Everyone should see it. I highly recommend this movie. I just don't understand why we waste money on this "drug war" shit and put it into finding and persecuting these sick, reptilian, maggots. Everyone involved is so cold and calculating. It hurts so many peoples lives, more than meth or pot. some may disagree. the druggies hurt them selves, the sex trade hurts many many more. What we need is a real life Dexter. To rid this planet of creeps, 1 creep at a time.

is it art?

I'm debating on weather i should change my blog name to "THIS Girls craft". I'd love to start selling some work. but, it's hard. i want to test the waters. I'd love to make pet collages and sell some mosaics. but, is it called art. i think I'm a wannabe, i couldn't draw my own stained glass designs if my life depended on it. i love Tiffany designs. plus, there are so many beautiful designs out there why would i like to draw my own. i have a friend who makes thousands of dollars with his Tiffany lamps. is that not an art choosing the right types of glass and the right colors. what i don't have is a good spiel. if you have a good spiel or rap you can sell 2 rocks glued together. i know I've seen it done. using words like reality and juxtapose and none it making any sense, but, know one knows what it means so it must be good. right!! oh well, i'll keep on crafting.

RANTING

I's snowing!!!! What's with that, i'm suppose to go swimming with a friend and just could'nt get out of bed. Listing to the snow crashing off our metal roof just made me sink deeper under the covers.Sorry laura>
the only thing that brighten up my day was remembering we have tomorrow off!! we're going to see "The Cowboy Junkies" at the englert theater in iowa city.I love that place. i saw patty griffin there last year. What a fabulous concert. That was one of the best things that happen to iowa city. A group of concerned citizens, raised money to save it. THey have gotten quiet a few great people to play there.
i decieded to work on my mosaic,it's going pretty well. I just do'nt know where in the hell i'm going to put it. Shelly the shell lady is pretty large when completly done.Well i better go get ready for work. Off to the the "island of broken toys"

Beautiful day

The weather is gorgous today. i was out riding my bike and visiting friends. took along walk with my 4 monkeys. i still think it's to cool to rake. or maybe it's that i' not ready to do that yet.
then on a more sober note. What is it > someone is miserable with them selves, so they take out their whole family and then them selves. On monday, a vice president of the hills bank, also a coke head was released on bond for embezzleing alot of money. killed his entire family. WHat's going on. i'm miserable so i'm killing everybody. there has been a rash of killings like that. there are SO many people out there so that means there are that many more weird people. I guess you could call it thinning the herd.

artists

I've always dabbled in art in some form. but, for the last 5 years, i've been in a slump. that's when i got into biking. i've ridden in Hawaii with women tours, what a blast that was!!! I've ridden 3 ragbrai's (bike ride across Iowa) with about 15thousand people.yes, 15 thousand. it's a real experience. i've also been in the best shape of my life!!!and i ride in the summer every day, 20 or more miles, plus longer rides on weekends. 50 or 60 miles. but, that leaves me time for little else. so i'm going to try a come to some balance. i've just finished or almost finished this shell mosaic. i've got the legs to go.i need to find some big interesting shells for the arm space. living in iowa, i've got winter to work on my art projects. collages are so much fun. but, mosaics are taking my time up this year. i've been checking out other peoples blogs and am blown away by all the creativity that's out there. i love the internet. i don't have many people to talk art with around here. right now i have SOOOO many ideas in my head and not enough time to do them all.

#2 of my ballerina series

#2 of my ballerina series

pickles is my subject for the ballerina series. I'm like alot of people that have pets as there kids. So what to do with all the pictures that accumulate. MAKE ART with them. I've done few for other people, after a loss of a beloved pet. they are greatly appreciated, more so if i can make one that really brings out the personality.

continue the story

well, to shorten the story. my sister accepted her guest. we grew up, left home. mom and dad sold the house. i tried and tried to get the head from 4 different people who had bought the house thru the years. no one would give it to me. until last year, i went home for a visit, mom had mentioned how the place had changed and i should check it out on my way out of town. i stopped when i saw a woman outside. i was'nt even thinking about the head. she was showing me the basement walk out and i looked out the window and gave a sigh. the wall was gone!!!! the lady saw my exspression and said "are you looking for the head". i said "YES" and she told me her husband had torn the wall out, and had thrown it in the dump truck. "I told him to bring that back here. I knew i was saving it it for some thing.she had no idea i had been trying to get it. when i got it in my hands, i took it to 2 historical societies in the area. after researching the piece and several peoples opinions-the general consensus was it probably was some sort of grave ornament. most likly from early pioneers and settlers. they would die and just bury people along the way. to me that made alot of sense. with the shovel dragging and people digging. they i often wondered if any kids in the house after us saw any thing. but, after seeing what it is like now for kids. PLUGGED IN at all times. filling there minds up with crap. they would NEVER see anything if it was right in front of them.

My Ghost Story

I found this stone head in 1965. it was on a bluff, up behind our house. it was also facing down so you could'nt see the face. i do vividly remember hearing something in my head telling me to flip it over, there were alot of other field stones laying around.i dug around it and flipped it. WOW!! i thought, rolled it home. i was about 7 or 8 ys old. soon after getting in situated in our yard, my dad put it in a stone wall he built. outside our bedroom windows. my sister and i shared a room.every night and day,all of us could hear a shovel being drug across the cement basketball court. you could'nt see anything. but, you could hear at all times of the day. in those days the subject of ghosts just WAS'nt.The Exorsist had been made yet. SO, that's not what we were thinking. But, what was that crazy dragging sound???? Then my sister moved to her own room. she was about 6 or 7. every night she would end up in my room or my mom and dads room sleeping on the floor. she kept saying there was a man in her room. Oh man, did my parents get mad and frustrated. still we were'nt thinking ghosts. this kept up for months. she fiially told herself "he has'nt hurt me yet." she said she just covered her head with blankets. but, he was there every night.then other things started up. She had her bed facing the door and at night she could see 2 men (different men) digging for something. there digging and digging, but they were'nt paying any attention to her.she decribed there clothes and size.more later........
